An article which appeared in a recent issue of your paper misrepresents Christian Science, and I request space for a brief corrective statement.

Christian Science is founded on the Bible; it is restoration of the primitive Christianity that Christ Jesus taught, lived, and demonstrated. In other words, it is a religion of love and good deeds, not of creeds; a spiritual or divinely mental method, which now, as when originally employed by the master Christian, heals both the sick and the sinning. Moreover, Christian Science is scientific, because it is exact knowledge of spiritual truth or law made available for practical use, and therefore susceptible of proof.

Mary Baker Eddy, a deeply religious New England woman, is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the author of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (obtainable at all Christian Science Reading Rooms and at most public libraries), which, with the exception of the Bible, is probably the most widely read religious book in the world today. In her book "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1), Mrs. Eddy defines Christian Science "as the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."

The assertions that Christian Science is "a mixture of Christianity and paganism," "satanic," and so on, is not likely to mislead the reading public, which is daily becoming better informed as to the teachings of Christian Science. Fair-minded people will naturally deprecate the use of outworn epithets in attacking a religion which the critic obviously does not understand, and therefore cannot rightly interpret and evaluate. The facts are that Christian Science inculcates faith in and worship of the one God, Spirit; that it emphasizes the need of gaining a spiritual understanding of God, and of man in His image and likeness. This spiritual understanding unfolds man's true relationship to his heavenly Father, builds up in the individual consciousness an enlightened and abiding faith in Him, "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." And, conversely, it eliminates ignorance, superstition, fear, sin, and other products of the carnal mind.

Space available for a letter does not permit correction of all the misstatements and the several misquotations which appear in the article under review. Suffice it to say, however, that those who understand Christian Science sufficiently to demonstrate it know that it has given them the basis for right thinking and Christian living; and that as a consequence they have become healthier, happier, and better men and women. Thus Christian Science is actually deepening and strengthening Christian faith, instead of undermining it, as our critic alleges.

An ever-increasing number of people are coming to Christian Science for help and healing; and the movement continues to grow and to prosper.
