All my life, until I was healed through Christian Science, I was ill and almost constantly under a doctor's care. In babyhood I had had an imperfect heart valve; later I had sciatic rheumatism, and then cancer, for which I underwent two operations. The final pronouncement was that I had perhaps six days to live.

A friend came in to see me about some charity work in which we were both interested, and found me very despondent. She had been healed by Christian Science, and she finally persuaded me to try it. She asked me to call a practitioner, but I replied by writing, not daring to use my voice, that I was forbidden to talk and was eating only very soft food, mostly liquid. She said she would take the responsibility if I would call.

I did not recognize until years later that my healing began right there. I called the practitioner, and although I felt she took my situation entirely too calmly, I agreed to visit her the next day. I slept that night without an opiate for the first time in nine weeks.
