Before coming into Christian Science, I spent the greater...

Before coming into Christian Science, I spent the greater part of my life lying on my back. I spent many months at two different watering resorts and hospitals, and, in addition, was compelled to wear a heavy brace from my thigh to my ankle.

After the passing on of my mother, I suffered from tuberculosis of the lungs and was confined in a sanatorium. Five noted physicians, after making a thorough examination, said that there was nothing they could do for me—that an operation was highly necessary, but that I could not live through one. I stayed at the sanatorium for many months, but when they finally decided to give me serum treatment, I refused to submit, saying that I wanted to go to California, where I could be healed through climate. I left the sanatorium, but it was not very long before I had another severe attack. This time we consulted three of the most prominent specialists in Pittsburgh. After each examination, I was advised that there was nothing that could be done—that I had only one chance in a hundred to live through an operation, and that I could not live much longer without one, as there was danger of peritonitis.

I made plans to go to California, and finally started in October, 1914. En route I became acquainted with a woman who recommended Christian Science, but I refused it. I soon found, however, that climate does not heal, and I steadily grew worse. When the hour seemed darkest and my disappointment unbearable, and I was alone among strangers, Christian Science was again presented to me.
