That Which Determines

As men come to comprehend the Science of knowing, it is learned that only those thoughts and actions which wait obediently on Mind, allowing spiritual law to govern them, need neither to be retraced nor reversed. "For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak," said Jesus. In such a consciousness of oneness with Mind is the cause and continuance of all being determined.

"Changes in belief may go on indefinitely, but they are the merchandise of human thought and not the outgrowth of divine Science," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 12 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." How evident on all sides are the fluctuations and uncertainties of mortal existence, resulting from the capricious tyranny of unprincipled thinking, bringing only indetermination and inharmony in their wake!

The motive determining each step taken by Christ Jesus in his mission of revealing the Father to the world, was to be found in his understanding of and obedience to Him whom he represented. Had Jesus stooped to "the merchandise of human thought," as in the wilderness he was tempted to do; had he allowed human will, fear, or doubt to deflect him from his great purpose, the Christ-message and example would have been lost to the world, in all the indeterminate welter of conjecture and irresolution.
