A few weeks ago, as I talked with a New York physician, he told me that of all the tens of thousands of patients who go to hospitals, clinics, and the offices of physicians in this great city, only twenty per cent are suffering from an organic disease. According to this physician, eighty per cent of all the illness in New York is made up of functional disorders. I venture to say that the same percentage would hold good right across this nation. The illness may be caused by nervous tension, worry, fears, emotional disturbances created by anxiety and cherished resentments, and many other kindred evils. This physician did not mean to say that the eighty per cent of the sick in New York have no symptoms of illness. They may have symptoms of disorders. ... Indeed, these symptoms may seem to indicate a serious organic condition. In reality, however, they are produced by a sick mind rather than a sick body. It would be of inestimable help to these people if they could learn to know Him who forgiveth all our iniquities, who healeth all our diseases, who redeemeth our lives from destruction....
