From Letters, Substantially as Published
In his letter in a recent issue, "X" expresses the desire to convince me that my views with regard to Christian Science are wrong. I much appreciate his desire, but I know that it is impossible of fulfillment, for, as it is said in II Timothy, "I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day." Christian Science is the Science of Christianity. The child just beginning at school may have learned nothing more than the fact that twice two makes four, but he can use that fact. The student at college may become skilled in higher mathematics, but he knows that there is much more beyond that to learn. So it is with Christian Science. One may be just a beginner in its study and its demonstration; another may have studied it longer and made many demonstrations. But no one fully understands it all, for it is as infinite as God. Mrs. Eddy said of herself (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Pref., p. ix): "Today, though rejoicing in some progress, she still finds herself a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ." One cannot appreciate or grasp the whole of Christian Science at the beginning of its study. Far, far from it! Many surgical cases have been healed solely by the use of Christian Science, but, recognizing that some demonstrations need much greater spiritual understanding than others. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 401), "Until the advancing age admits the efficacy and supremacy of Mind, it is better for Christian Scientists to leave surgery and the adjustment of broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon, while the mental healer confines himself chiefly to mental reconstruction and to the prevention of inflammation."
I have known of many cases in which Christian Scientists, through their own understanding of Christian Science or with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, have had teeth extracted or filled, or had other dental operations performed, with no sense of pain, thus proving the teaching of Christian Science that pain is unreal.
