Mental Porter

Since whatever occurs in our experience is the result of thought, the importance of mental alertness is apparent. Christ Jesus, well aware of the fallacious nature of mortal beliefs, enjoined his followers to be on guard, saying, as recorded by Matthew, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, recognized the need for watchfulness. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she has written (p. 392): "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously." How necessary, then, to watch, to guard the portal of thought from false beliefs which would contaminate our thinking and thereby prevent us from demonstrating our true selfhood! Christian Science shows how to be watchful at all times.

Perhaps one has permitted a false sense of lack to engage his thinking, and has found himself suddenly faced with the problem of maintenance without visible means of supply. By turning from sense to Soul, he sees that insufficiency does not partake of Truth, and is therefore but a finite claim, existing in belief only. To correct this condition, however, he must amend his mental state, reverse his thinking by replacing fear and doubt with an expectant faith in Love's limitless good. He must daily increase his spiritual understanding and utilize it. He must fill his consciousness with gratitude for benefits received and claim his inherent, inseparable relationship with God. Thus, when his mental state has been corrected, and spiritually illumined, the effect will be manifested in adequate provision for his well-being.
