I am very grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for her wonderful revelation of the Science of healing. I was reared in an orthodox church, and in one of its colleges I studied for the ministry. After graduation I occupied a pulpit for about a year, at the end of which time my health broke down, tuberculosis developed, and a doctor advised me to go to Colorado.
While convalescing, I had a great deal of leisure on my hands. I had heard much of Christian Science and of its growth, so I decided to buy a copy of its textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and familiarize myself with her teaching, in order that when I returned to my pulpit, I should be in a position to expose its fallacies and refute its claims. As I read the first chapter on Prayer, I was impressed with it as being the most profound and the most consistent treatise on the subject I had seen; and I had not read very far into the succeeding chapters before I realized I could not answer the author's arguments. Her inspired statements appealed to me as being self-evident truth. I could not resist them.
This was the beginning of my conversion to Christian Science, and of my ultimate healing. And what a contrast with my former belief! I had always been taught that God was omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent, but these great verities were treated merely as theory. I had not been taught that they could be used practically in dealing with life's problems. But in Christian Science I found that these great truths are the very basis of demonstration, the working Principle of healing and of all good.
