Christian Science has been the backbone of my life

Christian Science has been the backbone of my life. It uplifted and protected my mother from prenatal anxieties, tranquilized the moments of childbirth, and directed her actions and attitude as a parent.

I think back with gratitude on the simple, Christian atmosphere in which I matured. It was a rule in our household in times of stress to declare the truth audibly; that is, to repeat some clear statement memorized from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, such as, "There is no power apart from God" (p. 228). Very early I learned to turn thought away from erroneous suggestion to the ever-present right idea regarding whatever claimed to be manifested. I learned, too, to rely upon the healing logic of "the scientific statement of being," as given in the same textbook (p. 468), to help me in emergencies. For instance, one day, when I was less than ten years old, I rode past my station on an express train. Immediate reliance upon Truth checked panic, placed me in the loving care of one who saw me safely on a return train at the city terminal, and led me to my proper destination.

Again, when I was about thirteen, this instinctive turning to God brought help when the buggy in which my father and I were riding fell upside down into a deep gully. We had been driving on a side road in an isolated part of the country. Our horse landed on its side with my father's head beneath it. Because its feet were ensnared in the harness, the animal was unable to rise. I found myself sitting on a rock, unharmed, declaring the truth aloud. I called for help and a man appeared, who severed the harness and released my father. After a few days of earnest prayer my father became normal. The horse and buggy were unharmed.
