David

The Israelitish army stood dismayed;
Armed Saul strode moodily within his tent;
Goliath of Gath between the armies went,
In boastful arrogance his strength displayed.
Young David, from the fields, all unafraid,
Talked with the soldiers, asking what it meant;
Then of his king, with courage confident,
Begged that this venture to his charge be laid.

Compassion for his lambs, which gave him power
To twist the sinews of the lion and bear,
Now filled him for the people in this hour;
The spirit of the Lord fell on him there.
No sword was with him; but a shepherd's sling
Delivered Israel for its future king.
