Making the Valley Blossom

Quoting from Esaias the prophet, Jesus said, "Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low." Evidently this metaphor refers to different mental states calling for adjustment by divine influence. The word "every" in this comprehensive and comforting promise bids us cease believing that our valley is especially dark or our mountain peculiarly immovable.

Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 61), "Every valley of sin must be exalted, and every mountain of selfishness be brought low, that the highway of our God may be prepared in Science." "The highway of our God" marks the perfection of God. To tread it means to reject suggestions of defeat in overcoming whatever is unlike God. It means to bear true witness at all points and at all times. Every Christian Scientist is bidden to dwell insistently upon the unerring laws of God and to follow in the way they lead him. Then, undeterred by the constant temptation to associate himself and others with human imperfection, he will persevere in this righteous task.

Our Leader's reference to the "mountain of selfishness" implies more than what is ordinarily termed selfishness. She doubtless refers to the mortal belief of life and intelligence in matter, to the mortal sense of self as opposed to man's spiritual individuality. Times without number the belief in a "mountain of selfishness" has been brought low through one's increased reflection of divine Love. Whoever truly loves God, good, will deny selfishness and accept the perfect model. Then he will not fear or condone error in any form.
