I Have the Christ

What if the sky be dark and low at eve,
And lurid morning's gray
Bring no faint beam the mortal thought to cleave—
I have the Christ, and in my heart is day.

What if no friend I meet with outstretched hand,
To ease the burden that through years I've borne,
And though I walk in unfamiliar land—
I have the Christ, and cannot be forlorn.

What if grim error seems to ask for place—
I know 'tis but a shadow without name;
I know that Love supreme fills every space,
I have the Christ, and fear no evil's claim.
