"Take care of yourself!"
"Take care of yourself!" There are few, perhaps, who have not given or received this kindly, well-meant advice—advice, however, which almost invariably suggests thoughts of fear concerning one's physical condition or safety. Much time and attention are devoted to the care of the body, which in our ignorance we believe to be the center of our life and intelligence.
Through the teachings of Christian Science we have ample evidence and proof that even a slight understanding of the nature of God, and of man's relationship to Him, lessens the ignorance and false belief responsible for much unnecessary worry and trepidation with regard to the care of the body. And through the enlightenment which results from the consecrated study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works, the advice, "Take care of yourself!" assumes an entirely different meaning; for an understanding of this Science equips one with a method more potent, efficacious, and reliable than any other offered since the time of Jesus, whose firm denunciation of matter in the words, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing," caused even some of his disciples to forsake him. Mankind, in general, refuses to accept that statement of our Master, and so continues to suffer from the ills and limitations arising from the belief that the flesh is actual, man mortal, and life material.
Who would not be free of the fear which accrues from the belief in existence as material, from fear of food, climate, and other conditions said to influence the life of men for good or ill? In the opening chapter of the Bible we find the true spiritual record of creation, which states in no uncertain way that man is made in the image and likeness of God, Spirit. Reasoning from this basis, we arrive at the logical conclusion that, being made in the image and likeness of God, man is spiritual and perfect. And to the extent that we hold thought to the true facts of perfect being, we shall manifest harmony in our present experience.
