In reviewing the results of the study and application of...
In reviewing the results of the study and application of Christian Science in my life, I recall with profound gratitude three outstanding healings.
When I was a young woman, in my early twenties, a disturbance of normal functions became evident. Later the many physicians consulted accepted the condition as chronic, and finally as incurable. From the beginning the difficulty was accompanied by severe headaches, which appeared periodically, increasing in frequency of occurrence and intensity of suffering until, for the ensuing twenty-three years, it seemed as if almost every phase of my life were governed by these headaches. With the aid of kindly physicians, every known remedy was applied and everything possible was done, including one operation, but with no relief resulting.
During the earlier years of the experience, a dear friend presented Christian Science to me, and although it appealed to me as very logical and reasonable, I gradually dropped away from its teachings and continued to suffer for ten years longer. Necessity then turned my thoughts to the grain of truth which had lain dormant in my consciousness for so long, and taking up my Bible and Science and Health, I found that they had become new books to me. After five years of earnest study, and with the help of a practitioner, I was able to realize my freedom. Mrs. Eddy describes the doom of the dragon in these words (Science and Health, p. 565): "In the Apocalypse, when nearing its doom, this evil increases and becomes the great red dragon, swollen with sin, inflamed with war against spirituality, and ripe for destruction." This was literally true in my experience: the last attack of headache seemed to be the climax of the seeming power it had been exerting over me for twenty-three years; then it vanished into its native nothingness, and there has never been the slightest symptom since.
