Christian Science was brought to me at a time of great need. From early childhood I had never been very strong, and as years went by I was rather like the woman in the Bible of whom it was written that she "had suffered many things of many physicians, ... and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." Gastric and intestinal trouble, which periodically attacked me, and rheumatism had combined to make life a burden; and when the latter began to manifest the form of arthritis, I was filled with fear. My mental outlook was greatly depressed by reason of the disappointment which I felt in my association with the orthodox church, of which I was a loyal worker and regular attendant. When I was quietly reading my Bible and was in silent communion with the Father, reaching out for truth, many ideas came to me which were not at all in accordance with what I had been taught in the church, but which gave me great comfort, and I longed to have them confirmed. It was at this time that the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was lent to me. When I had read only the first few pages of this wonderful book, I felt that in the seeming blank wall of depression and suffering a door had opened leading to a garden of promise beyond.
My first healing came when I read the beautiful promise on page 14: "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well." The spiritual uplifting I gained from this enabled me immediately to discard shoes with steel arch supports. I had believed for a long time that it was absolutely necessary for me to wear these because of fallen arches. Gradually this condition disappeared and the muscles of my toes, which had been bound by fear, were unbound, and when on holiday a month or two later I was able to scramble over rocks and walk long distances instead of walking slowly with a stick. I had been healed of rheumatism. Following this wonderful liberation, I received an instantaneous healing of the need of wearing glasses for both reading and distance. The gastric and intestinal troubles also disappeared.
During the years which have followed, I have found that in proportion as I have faithfully studied and practiced the truth taught in Christian Science, harmony has been established physically, in my home, and in my environment. One day, when stepping down from a chair, I experienced a sharp pain in my back. I declared that "accidents are unknown to God" (ibid., p. 424) and was able to go about my duties; but two days later I was again attacked with very great pain and could not stand. A small bone at the base of the spine seemed to protrude. Help was asked for from a practitioner, but although considerable alleviation was experienced, the healing did not take place for about ten days. The extra burden entailed by my enforced rest fell heavily on one member of my family; and in my desire to ease the burden I felt impelled one morning to get up. As I got out of bed I heard a pronounced click and felt the bone move back into place. I felt grateful beyond words for this further proof of the adequacy of Christian Science. I was also healed of phlebitis at a lecture, when it became clear to me that this difficulty was only a mortal mind fabrication held before human consciousness, which I could accept or reject. With its definite rejection, its manifestation quickly faded away. I have also been privileged to witness many healings among members of my family.
