Sometimes one's consciousness is flooded with light, so strong a light that words fail to express it. So it is with me when I look back and think how helpful Christian Science has been to me; how it has lifted me out of despair; how it has comforted me; how it has been a guide to me always, when I have turned to its teachings!
Before writing more about benefits received, I want to try to say a few words about my admiration for so upright a woman as Mary Baker Eddy. I am forever grateful that she had the perseverance to record for us the way of the Christ. In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" there seems to me to be found all that one requires to raise one's thought out of the chaos of today's thinking into spiritual, right thinking.
I have had to bring up four children alone. Christian Science came to me through a friend who, when she saw my sorrow, despair, and bewilderment over the seeming injustice that had appeared in my life, asked me to go to a Christian Science church. The service was peaceful and consoling to me. My two youngest children, who were too young for Sunday school, went with me. Soon the elder of the two went with the two eldest to the Christian Science Sunday School, and I had the youngest with me at all Sunday morning services. He was two years old when I started attending the Christian Science church, and he always sat quietly. I cannot express what a joy and rest it was for me to know that while I was refreshed by the service, the children were well taken care of. Later I felt and still feel a gratitude I cannot express for this tuition during their growing years. There they received what no gold can buy.
We lost part of our fortune before I came into Science, and later it was all to go. But I have never felt freer than now, because I have learned that God is the source of my supply, and the enrichment of my heart and thought is far greater than any material gain could be.
During their childhood, the four children had many healings, most of them instantaneous. I moved to the south of England for some years, and there I met a loving practitioner, who would come at my call and give all four a treatment, if there was a problem I could not solve myself. While in Bournemouth they all became ill one evening. I called the practitioner and also a doctor, as there was much contagion about and the law demanded that a doctor be called. The practitioner came first and began her work. But the doctor found them with high fever. However, he knew I trusted in God, and said he would call the next day. When he came the fever had left them and they were well. However, he said they had had measles when he first came, and so they must stay in bed for a few days. After a few days they were all playing about in the garden. The doctor himself stated that he did not know how Christian Science worked, or what it was, but he had come and found the four children with high fever one night, and when he returned next day they were all well.
The Hymnal was used a great deal when the children were small and was especially appreciated by us all at that time.
I am indeed grateful for God's gift to man through Mrs. Eddy by which one can understand and more fully enjoy the Bible, and try to follow the life of Christ Jesus.
