Regeneration

In the Gospel according to Matthew it is recorded that Jesus spoke of the compensation which should come to those who, as he said, "have followed me, in the regeneration." A definition of "regeneration" is "the entering into a new and spiritual life; the new birth; the being born again, ... requisite for entrance into the kingdom of God."

In referring to Jesus' words and asking the question, "What is meant by regeneration?" Mrs. Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 73), "It is the appearing of divine law to human understanding; the spiritualization that comes from spiritual sense in contradistinction to the testimony of the so-called material senses."

Therefore, "the appearing of divine law" to human consciousness means the gradual disappearance of the sensuous concept and the human beliefs connected with it. Through the appearing and unfoldment of Truth in individual consciousness material concepts are dissolved, and man as God's reflection is recognized. This spiritualization of thought may seem to be slow in some instances, and fraught with many difficulties, but Truth is ever at hand to guide and free us. Sometimes the light may seem wholly obscured, but that does not mean that Truth is absent for a moment.
