Unity in Christian Science

Mrs. Eddy writes: "Unity is the essential nature of Christian Science. Its Principle is One, and to demonstrate the divine One, demands oneness of thought and action" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 264). On this basis the false claims of division, double-mindedness, dissension, are ruled out in the practice of Christian Science. Like every other claim of mortal mind, that of disunity rests on the hypothesis of many minds, whereas there is one Mind only. By our acknowledgment of the basic unity of all Mind's ideas, we discover that the problems of personal sense are always hypothetical, not bona fide, and this discovery heals difficult situations and conditions. Unity, spiritually understood, is established in and by divine Principle and is demonstrated in human experience by one's obedience to Principle.

Unity is established among Christian Scientists working together as each one holds to his spiritual individuality, learns to express it, and also to behold and trust the individuality of others. This unity of spirit dissociates evil claims from person, law, cause, or effect. And as we have patiently to encourage our own spiritual growth and overcoming, so are we called to take the same attitude toward one another as we advance together in our demonstration of unity with divine Mind.

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Differences in human opinion are not infrequent, due to still undestroyed self-will and insufficient spiritual vision. But these differences leave untouched the basic unity of Christian Scientists and their united aims as workers in our Cause. A clearer discernment of the everlasting oneness of God and man disperses the darkness and dissension of human misunderstandings induced by ignorance and superstition. Hence our Leader's inspiring statement (ibid., p. 131), "Christian Scientists preserve unity, and so shadow forth the substance of our sublime faith, and the evidence of its being built upon the rock of divine oneness,—one faith, one God, one baptism."
