I first heard of Christian Science in the year 1905
I first heard of Christian Science in the year 1905. I had to install some window screens in a house for a woman who was a Christian Scientist, the first one whom I had ever met. She had a son who had been sent home from college against the wishes and strenuous objections of the medical profession, but the woman had insisted and finally demanded that her boy be sent home. The doctor said that the young man had pneumonia and would not reach home alive, as he was in such a weak condition. I saw three men carry him into his home. When I went there the next morning he had been entirely healed by Christian Science. I was much impressed by this healing.
My next experience was about twenty-four years ago, when I had blood poisoning in my left arm. I accidentally ran a cypress splinter into my first finger. The doctor ordered me to stay in bed, and did all that seemed possible for a man to do, but my finger was getting worse and became very painful, discolored, and swollen. I had been in bed for one week when my daughter, a member of a Christian Science church, asked if I had any objections to trying Christian Science treatment. I answered, "No." She then called up a practitioner whom I had never seen, and in less than one hour the pain, swelling, and discoloration had all vanished, and I was entirely healed.
About nine years ago I began to think that it was about time for me to study this Science; but it seemed hard for me to grasp the meaning of it. I finally came to the conclusion that if I could get some comprehension of the meaning of omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience, I might better understand "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; so taking one word at a time, I studied each of them carefully. I soon began to feel that God was everywhere, and that I could know His loving presence and power at all times and under all conditions. After this I attended the Christian Science church service one Sunday morning. The subject of the Lesson-Sermon was "Spirit," and I shall never forget how lovingly the Scriptures and Science and Health were read. I got a clearer understanding of the subject; it all seemed wonderful and entirely different from anything I had heard before.
