Immediately following the birth of our eldest son, I was plunged into the very depths of mental suffering, being harassed every waking moment by the fear of eventually succumbing to a dread disease, which an osteopath said might develop if a small blemish on my body were injured. So obsessed did I become with this fear that I lost all interest in my affairs and was fast becoming a burden to my family and friends.

In this hopeless and despairing condition my feeble faith turned for strength to the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner. She understood enough of God's goodness to imbue me with sufficient courage, within a month's time, to make a long journey, at the end of which my husband was awaiting our baby and me.

As I reflect upon the dire situations which arose in my experience during the intervening years, I can see that "Love is not hasty to deliver us from temptation, for Love means that we shall be tried and purified" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 22). "One sacrifice, however great, is insufficient to pay the debt of sin" (ibid., p. 23).
