It is now more than ten years since I began to study...
It is now more than ten years since I began to study Christian Science, and I am happy to be able to add my voice to the chorus which gives thanks to God for the benefits received from a little understanding of this marvelous Science. I was healed, among other things, of malaria which I had had from the age of sixteen until my twenty-sixth year. I used quantities of quinine and all sorts of home remedies, but they checked the fever only for a while, and in two or three months, six at most, it all came back. It is now over five years since this illness has appeared.
One day I wanted to catch a hen and I bent quickly toward her. As I lifted my head again a large iron wire, serving as a hook on the door, entered the corner of my eye, piercing the lid and coming out on the other side. With difficulty I got inside the house. I called my sister, asking her to give me some cold water with which to bathe the wound. She was very much frightened to see me in this state, and said that something must be done immediately. Meanwhile the eye began to swell.
After I had bathed it I lay down on my bed, thinking with gratitude that here was surely an opportunity to prove God's all-power. I asked my sister to read me the Lesson for Thanksgiving Day from the Christian Science Quarterly; and I repeated to myself "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. After this I got up and attended to my daily duties. I had to meet some opposition from each member of the family and from neighbors who saw me. Everyone thought it his duty to warn me that if I did not go at once to an oculist, I should lose my eye. The second day I could do some sewing, but the rent in the eyelid seemed to be healing without closing, so that in lowering the lid I saw through it. I felt a little sense of fear, but I held firm, repeating that, as a child of God, made in His image and likeness, nothing could be added to me nor anything taken away. The fifth or sixth day the wound in the lid closed, and I was healed.
