When I first turned to Christian Science over thirty years...
When I first turned to Christian Science over thirty years ago, I at once experienced its healing power.
The first healing was of a throat condition, which a New York specialist had said would incapacitate me for professional work for at least six months. Without any faith or interest in Christian Science itself, but willing to follow the suggestion of a friend, I went to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, and in three days I found my throat and voice entirely normal. This awakened my interest as well as my gratitude, and I began the daily study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Three months later I was forced to lay aside the glasses I had worn every waking hour for several years, because I could no longer see with them. A condition of double astigmatism had disappeared through the study of the textbook without any direct work or even expectation of a healing, but as the result of a spiritually awakened, uplifted, open consciousness. From this time Christian Science became the dominant interest in my life, and it has proved to me over and over that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).
Many other healings have been experienced—physical, moral, and financial, some have been slow and some quick. For each and every testing time I am deeply grateful. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 43 of Science and Health, "The divine must overcome the human at every point," and in each healing experience some human belief has yielded to a spiritual fact and a clearer understanding of my heritage as the son of God has been realized. Today my great desire is more fully to understand and practice that perfect rule given us by Mrs. Eddy in "Pulpit and Press" (p. 4), "You have simply to preserve a scientific, positive sense of unity with your divine source, and daily demonstrate this." In this way only can I express the deep reverence, love, and gratitude I feel for Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy.—(Miss) Alice F. Chamberlain, Scarsdale, New York.
