Our Spiritual Shield

In material warfare massive weapons have to be moved to the scene of action by the opposing armies, whereas in Christian warfare every warrior carries his means of defense in the sanctuary of his own consciousness. "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds."

Before Christian Science revealed the way of using the infinite power and presence of good correctively and curatively, one was perhaps prone to parry evil's thrusts with more thrusts, and to harm himself and his fellows by means of destructive criticism. The secret of the spiritual shield was little known, and the defensive armor of Love and Truth little worn. But now it is for every student of Christian Science to prove the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210): "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited."

In Christian Science the way of prevention of evil, as well as protection, is made plain. Truth destroys error in human consciousness, and Truth is untouched by that which presumes to oppose its authority. In these words from the ninety-first Psalm, the preventive method is indicated: "His truth shall be thy shield and buckler." Since Truth is the shield, what is the enemy? It is a lie against Truth, a lie which none need fear, an enemy to which none should surrender. The thoughts of divine Mind are real and potent, and they constitute the complete defense of those who invariably entertain them. No enemy shaft can pierce the shield of absolutely true thinking, and each one must carry his own shield.
