Fidelity, the Passport to Spiritual Power
One of the most challenging and elucidating statements pertaining to spiritual power is to be found on page 270 of "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy. In speaking of the necessity of following Christ Jesus, she says, "Fidelity to his precepts and practice is the only passport to his power." Here is a statement that should be provocative of serious thought on the part of every student of Christian Science.
Through her spiritual vision and understanding of Truth, our beloved Leader achieved fidelity to good, and by this means she healed all manner of sin and disease. Unquestionably, the fullness of her spiritual revelation would have been lost to the world had it not been for her selfless labor for mankind. For even as our Master labored to imbue his disciples with the spirit of his teaching, so through her writings, her precepts and example, Mrs. Eddy guided mankind in the Christly way of living and thinking.
If one is to be obedient to a call for greater fidelity to our Master's precepts and practice, one must gain a true sense and appreciation of all his words and works through an earnest study of his life. Christ Jesus conformed to spiritual truth. No one, for instance, can picture him not living in accordance with the Ten Commandments. We may infer that these Commandments formed the foundation of his high and lovely precepts in the Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon he presented the ideal of perfection, and we must acknowledge that each and every precept was exemplified in the very depths of his own life's experience, for Jesus lived what he taught. Consequently, we very reverently study this hillside sermon, that there may be no hesitancy in following his way of life as his disciples were required to do, when he called to them from the shore, "Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men."
