Stillness

Christian Science is saying to an agitated world, in the words of Moses, "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord," and those who have ears to hear are receiving this arresting message.

Centuries ago this message was delivered to the children of Israel in the midst of apparently terrifying circumstances. The pursuing Egyptians were bent on their recapture and enslavement. The Red Sea in front of them seemed an impassable barrier. Yet their obedience to this message saved them. When this frightened personal sense had been stilled, they were told to go forward; and they found the way open before them.

The Pharaohs of today, which Mrs. Eddy defines as "false teachings, false theories, false fears, that enforce new forms of oppression" (The People's Idea of God, p. 11), would still recapture and hold us in bondage if we yielded to the belief in their reality. But, through the revelation of Christian Science, we can free ourselves and others from all enslavement. In the light of this revelation the command could today be rendered: Fear not, cease allowing your thoughts to revolve distractedly in the belief that materiality, disaster, and distress are real. Be quiet, and acknowledge the allness of Spirit, God, and see what salvation is.
