In your issue of July 6 [1936], in a published report of a farewell sermon delivered by a local clergyman, there appeared a misleading statement about Christian Science. Your publication of this correction, in fairness to your readers, will be much appreciated.

This clergyman is reported to have said: "Christian Science was also dethroning Christ by saying that sin, disease, and death do not exist. Christ knew that those things existed. If they did not exist, there would be no room for a Saviour."

To mortal, material sense, which Paul described as the carnal or fleshly mind, those things do exist, and appear very real, even more real at times than "the things of the Spirit." Everyone must admit, however, that the testimony of the material senses is mutable and unreliable. Did not the Master define devil, evil, Satan, as a lie, and say, "He is a liar, and the father of it"? And is not a lie and opposite of truth, that which is void of truth? Of the woman whom he healed after she had been bowed together eighteen years, he said that Satan had bound her.
