Readers of the Bible are aware that certain promises...
Day by Day
Readers of the Bible are aware that certain promises made therein have not been carried out by professing Christians for centuries. For instance, the promise of Christ Jesus, given in the fourteenth chapter of John's Gospel, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
Why has this promise not been fulfilled? Has Christianity failed? Or have we failed to understand Christianity?
Christ Jesus healed the sick, cleansed the sinner, and raised the dead. Are we doing these things today in the Christian churches? Our Master healed not only functional disorders, but also organic and contagious diseases. Deafness, blindness, palsy, insanity, leprosy, yielded instantaneously to the Christ, which he demonstrated.
The verse just quoted from the Gospel of John shows plainly that the gift of healing was bestowed upon all who believe, that is to say, who understand his word. It was not given only to his immediate disciples. Every Christian, therefore, has the ability to heal through the power of spiritual understanding.
Commenting on the apostle's words, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in one of her works, entitled "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 221): "There are no other heaven-appointed means than the spiritual with which to heal sin and disease. Our Master conformed to this law, and instructed his followers, saying, 'He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.'"
This is the revival the world is waiting for, the revival of works instead of words. No other revival is promised, and none other is needed. When the spiritual consciousness of the nations is awakened, the sick will be healed and the sinner reformed through spiritual means alone. Then will come the fulfillment of that assurance given by Christ Jesus, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
