"The power of an endless life"

The words chosen for the caption of this editorial are found in Hebrews (7:16), and were applied by the writer of that book to Christ Jesus. They refer primarily to the deathless, eternal Christ, Truth, which Jesus taught and demonstrated, and which revealed God, Spirit, divine Mind, to be the only Life.

Mortals believe in a life apart from God, which has a beginning and an ending. They believe that life passes into and out of matter; that because it began at a given time, it will end at some time. Mortals are born and exist with the fear of death latent in thought. This is often an unrecognized fear, but through circumstances it may at any time become conscious and active. The Bible tells us of those "who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." With the passing of years the chronic fear of death is likely to become acute. How reassuring it is, therefore, to let one's thought dwell on "the power of an endless life"!

The fundamental characteristics of the Life which is God are self-existence, eternality, indestructibility. Man, created and maintained by God, his divine Principle, expresses forever the quality of immortality. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 81), "Man in the likeness of God as revealed in Science cannot help being immortal." And she continues in the same paragraph, "In Science, man's immortality depends upon that of God, good, and follows as a necessary consequence of the immortality of good."
