Accepting Divine Comfort
Christian Science offers spiritual comfort to one and all. It dissolves pride, causes self-love to disappear, and brings light to the night of sorrow. Many are willing to trust God for their health and the supply of daily needs, but do they as fully trust God for their happiness? Do they always trust divine Love to compensate any and every sense of human loss? Spiritual comfort can help us in every trying experience, but we feel this comfort only as we honestly accept it on the basis that man is spiritual, eternally beloved of the Father-Mother God, never bereft of any good, because he is forever the complete and joyous expression of the divine nature.
Christ Jesus spoke of the "Comforter" as "the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive." Discomfort is material; real comfort is spiritual. It reaches us through our willingness to grasp and apply the truth about happiness, the truth about universal, impartial Love, the truth about health and everlasting life, the truth about the infinite unity of good. This acceptance of the blessings we need involves rejection of the discords which hitherto we may have endured as inevitable.
Of old, Rahel "refused to be comforted," as we read in Jeremiah. Today the student of Christian Science must refuse to be discomforted, cast down by a personal sense of himself and others. He must honestly reach out for spiritual comfort through the spiritual sense which knows only well-being. In "Unity of Good" (p. 18) our Leader says, "Is not our comforter always from outside and above ourselves?" The Christian Scientist who cherishes responsiveness to the ever-present comfort of Spirit will always be blessed by it.
