Relation of the Church Member to the Reading Room

The Reading Rooms provided by the Christian Science denomination have a definite mission of wide scope. When a branch church is organized, provision for a Reading Room is immediately made in obedience to the Manual of The Mother Church, which in Article XXI, Section 1, reads in part, "Each church of the Christian Science denomination shall have a Reading Room."

The proper establishment of this activity calls into action more than the co-operation between board of directors and membership. It requires concrete unity of purpose which has behind it the force of individual right thought expanding into demonstration. The necessary human footsteps lead to adequate provision for the material needs; but what primarily takes place is the focusing of right ideas, whereby the oneness of supply and demand is found to be in operation. This high purpose blooms into harmony and beauty, into necessary equipment and restful surroundings.

In the revelation of Christian Science the spiritual nature of creation as consisting of divine ideas is shown, whereas the structure and conditions of the material world express human concepts. Therefore, a Reading Room is not merely a library which is to be maintained; it is a symbol of the sanctuary of Love.
