Detours
Probably everyone who has driven an automobile to any considerable extent has at some time, and maybe many times, been confronted by a sign reading, in effect, "Detour ahead! Road dangerous, but passable."
One such experience taught a student of Christian Science so many interesting and helpful lessons that to review the circumstance in its mental aspect has more than once made the seemingly rather rugged, but nonetheless straight and narrow path from sense to Soul more understandable.
Late one afternoon, before modern highway systems were as smooth and safe as they usually are today, it became necessary for the student to make an unexpected trip over unfamiliar roads to a city somewhat over a hundred miles distant. For several miles a smooth concrete highway enticed the traveler to speed on his way with sacrely a care and a heedless lapsing into a sense of false security, and even of exuberance. How like the experience of some of us when we enjoy our first healing in Christian Science, and everything seems rosy and progress rapid!
