My first healing has always seemed to me beautiful and...
My first healing has always seemed to me beautiful and wonderful, because at the time I knew nothing of Christian Science, except that it was a religion which claimed to heal. I had never attended a service and had never read any of the literature, and knew but one Christian Scientist. She was a neighbor whom I admired and respected because of her lovely character.
For eight years I had suffered from insomnia and was constantly taking a drug to induce sleep. Finally, through grief over the passing on of dear ones, and financial difficulties, I was reduced to a state of acute nervous prostration. Nothing the physicians and do brought me any peace; and they finally decided to send me to a sanatorium for an indefinite period.
While I was brooding over this situation, not being able to see how it was possible for me to go away, the thought came to me, They say Christian Science heals! Immediately, I arose from my bed and telephoned the neighbor who I knew was a Christian Scientist. After explaining my troubles to her I asked her if she thought Christian Science could help me. She said, "I do not think, I know it will help you!" I then inquired what I should do, and was told I needed a practitioner. As I knew nothing of how to go about getting this help, I asked her to send one to my home. A practitioner came to see me some hours later, and I shall never forget her loving expression, her compassion and patience, as I poured out to her all my troubles. My one cry was, "Oh, if I could only sleep!" She spoke to me of God's ever-presence and loving care for His children, and said that as I was one of His beloved children He would give me all I needed; and she quoted the Bible statement, "He giveth his beloved sleep." This was a comforting thought to me, and I asked the practitioner to help me. After she left I tried to understand the truth about peace, and while I was wondering about it I fell asleep and slept the whole night through. When I awoke the next morning I was entirely healed.
