I first heard of Christian Science about 1902, and thought...
I first heard of Christian Science about 1902, and thought it to be merely a fad, but a friend invited me to attend a service at the little church in our town, which I did on the following Sunday. During that service I was healed of the practice of taking medicine and of the use of profane language. Such peace and harmony came over me that when the service was over, I reluctantly and cautiously arose, fearing lest I should break the spell.
After reading some copies of the Sentinel I felt sure that this was the religion for which I had so long been praying and longing. My existence from infancy to manhood had always seemed dark—full of disease and other kinds of discord. Through the hope of finding peace and a kind and loving God, I became a student of Christian Science.
Some time after I took up this study, it occurred to me that I might be healed of the one great source of darkness and despair which had been with me all my life. I was startled when this thought came to me and almost afraid to hope for such a blessing. This disease claimed to be in the stomach and bowels, but as far as a name or cause of the trouble, no two doctors could agree. I had had treatment from many doctors and took several kinds of medicine each day. I was dieted and restricted in my food almost to mere bread and water. I could not venture far from home, nor for long at a time. My schooling had been cut short and my education was incomplete. The doctors were puzzled to see me growing worse instead of better. I wished many times that I were dead and out of the way.
