Christian Science is defined by Mrs. Eddy on page 1 of her book "Rudimental Divine Science" as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Students of Christian Science are proving that a right understanding and correct application of this divine law in human affairs dispels discord and establishes harmony.
Day by day mankind is tempted through the five physical or carnal senses to believe in sin, disease, and death; to manifest hatred, envy, dishonesty; and to suffer from unemployment and poverty. To heal and remove these conditions is the mission of Christian Science, which declares that the essential starting point is to gain a correct sense of what God is and of man's relationship to Him.
A deep and consecrated study of the Bible, in the light thrown on it by the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, reveals the progressive unfolding of the true concept of God in human consciousness; and the dawning of this divine light or spiritual understanding of God may be traced throughout the Bible up to its supreme revelation in the teachings of Jesus the Christ.
It is often asked, "How is the healing done in Christian Science?" As a Christian Scientist learns the mental nature of all things, he begins to distinguish the great difference between the divine Mind—God—and the carnal or mortal mind, which St. Paul termed "enmity against God." He discerns that the discords of life arise from the false beliefs of this carnal mind, and that they can be and are destroyed by the thoughts or ideas of the divine Mind, the Mind which was in Christ Jesus. As, through prayerful and persistent effort, he gains more of this Mind, he is able to discern God's thoughts and think as Jesus thought, and discords—mental, moral, and physical—begin to disappear.
The unemployment question is today a very pressing one and of great general interest, and many who have come to Christian Science genuinely seeking help in this problem have found their answer in satisfactory work. This has been accomplished through an endeavor to replace unproductive thoughts and unhelpful traits of character with such qualities as honesty, wisdom, intelligence, and the fruits of the Spirit enumerated by St. Paul—qualities which are attained only through an increased understanding of God. If, instead of concentrating on the apparent necessity of "getting a job," an individual realizes that by expressing these divine attributes he has something of great value to give, he will inevitably find his services in demand; and, further, that their right application to any task which lies at hand invariably leads to success.
The same remedy can be applied to the collective as well as to the individual problems of human existence. International suspicion, fear, envy, greed are but the accumulated results of individual hatred and fear. As men, women, and children of every nation learn to overcome sin in themselves and to apply the Golden Rule in all their relations with one another, this will eventually find expression in better feeling between nations and speed the time when all differences, great and small, will be settled by peaceful arbitration.
