Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
Norfolk, England.
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Norwich, received an invitation from the Dean and Chapter of Norwich Cathedral to send two representatives of the Christian Science church to attend the united Jubilee Thanksgiving Service held in Norwich Cathedral on Monday, May 6. The board of First Church, Norwich, asked the First Reader and the Committee on Publication to attend as official representatives, and this was gratefully done, seats being reserved for them, with representatives of several other denominations, in the chancel.
With the exception of the two daily newspapers, the excerpts from our weekly Lesson-Sermons have appeared quite regularly; and there is no doubt that all five papers, embracing eleven localized editions, look upon them as a "routine" feature. It has been noted with gratitude that the excerpts appear just the same when other constructive articles about Christian Science are printed. The same papers as last year continue publishing "Good Thoughts" regularly.
The evening daily paper in Norwich has been running a paragraph entitled "Time Flies," being excerpts from its issue of twenty-five years ago. It is quite a short paragraph, but the editor lately chose, as being worth reprinting, the following item: "A Christian Science community has lately been formed in Norwich, meetings being held in an upper room." Yet another instance of the trend of newspaper thought in respect to Christian Science came to my notice in the following experience. A young news editor of one of the weekly papers, whose paper had been publishing our excerpts, etc., for some time, after acknowledging that he realized he still had some antagonism to overcome in regard to Christian Science, went on to say, "But I believe that there is a religious revival coming, and I am sure your church will be in the forefront!" And he indicated that he would welcome items, from time to time, about Christian Science.
Nebraska.
We have reason to feel grateful for the attitude of the press in Nebraska toward Christian Science. During the year only three adverse criticisms appearing in newspapers were brought to the attention of your Committee. A number of published friendly criticisms were reported.
Fruitage from radio programs continues to multiply. One who was healed by the words of Truth voiced in one of our programs wrote: "I experienced a healing as the result of a radio program recently given. As I listened to the message my consciousness was flooded with such a new and fresh realization of man's divine sonship that I was completely freed of a mental and physical disturbance that had tempted me for many years." Similar words of gratitude could be multiplied many times.
Oxfordshire, England.
This year the press has definitely been more willing to recognize the truth of Christian Science. The first account of our own Thanksgiving Service appeared last autumn in the Oxford Times. In the same paper was published a report of an address given by Dr. Martin Jones at Mansfield College in which he described a remarkable healing by Christian Science. The speech was reported under a headline commending Christian Science. As the result of an interview, the editor promised to allow us a fuller report of lectures, apportioning to us in our turn the space given to sermons of other denominations.
