It is natural to be especially grateful for the first proof...
It is natural to be especially grateful for the first proof one receives of the efficacy of Christian Science in healing. In my own case, the fear and effects of what my doctor had told me was an incurable disease were eliminated after a few conversations with a teacher in a Christian Science Sunday School. About four years previously I had undergone an operation for appendicitis and peritonitis, from which I recovered only to find that in my weakened condition I had contracted a kidney trouble which, according to the doctor, was developing into Bright's disease. Each winter I was obliged to be away from school for weeks at a time, and was unable to take part in sports or any strenuous exercise. The doctor held out no hope of healing these troubles and told me that my only chance of mitigating them would be to live in a warm, dry climate, such as the north of Africa. This suggestion was utterly impractical, and I resigned myself to the fate that had been pictured for me.
Then my mother, who long had been dissatisfied with her religion, heard from a relative of the benefits and comfort he had received through Christian Science. She attended a few services, and after one of them borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She told me something of this truth and asked whether I should like to read the textbook. I began to read and found therein a logical presentation of the truth of Being. My next step was to attend the Christian Science Sunday School, and the teacher's help and understanding brought about a healing, even before I had gained more than a glimpse of this beneficial truth. This occurred eleven years ago, and since that time I have been completely free from this complaint and have continued to live a normal, healthy, and active life.
Christian Science has helped me in many other ways—especially in my business career. At one time it seemed that there was no possibility of further progress for some years in the office in which I was working. I had become dissatisfied with this situation until, one day, I realized that whatever duty I had to perform must be done willingly and efficiently, for, as the expression of God, I was working for Him in the way He appointed. These words of Paul showed me the right steps to take: "Obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; . . . and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." At once I felt happy in my work, and the following morning I was offered a newly-created position in another department of the same company, which I gladly accepted. Although it seemed that I was not immediately able to fulfill all the duties the new position entailed, I was certain that the power which had placed me there would still be with me as a constant source of intelligence and confidence to enable me to perform any necessary task. Through the years following this experience, the power of omnipotent Mind and Love has sustained me and freed me from a sense of personal achievement and responsibility which otherwise might have proved a handicap to progress.
