I want to go on record as standing squarely behind the statement made by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 444): "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'"

For a good many years before that absolute fact became a part of my thinking I was an utterly bewildered wanderer in the wilderness of materiality, a helpless flounderer attempting to live without God. And it took some years of earnest and persistent study before I was able to accept as a fact the statement that "God is . . . a very present help in trouble."

I had seen the desire for alcohol slip from me, together with the use of lurid profanity. I had abandoned spectacles, worn to correct vision which had been described by doctors as shortsightedness of one eye and farsightedness of the other. These healings, together with the gradual healing of numerous traits of character, were the milestones along the highway, demonstrations that enabled me to continue active study and prayerful work, even though the way was often obscured by doubts and fears that grew like weeds all about me.
