About fifteen years ago, after a physician was unable to...

About fifteen years ago, after a physician was unable to do anything more for me, I was persuaded to try Christian Science. Within two weeks I was a well woman. In fact I had occasion to visit the doctor about three weeks after his last visit and he did not recognize me at first, as he said I looked so well and healthy.

Two months later, while in a store, I stepped backward into an open trap door and fell down eight rough stone steps onto a cement floor. I was rushed to a hospital and did not regain consciousness until about five hours later. The doctors said that there was every indication of a fractured spine, and that it looked as if the back of my head was badly injured. I was delirious. My husband telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately took up the work. The following day being Sunday, the doctors decided to X-ray on Monday to find out the extent of the injuries. By Sunday evening I asked to get out of bed, but they would not consent to it. They said they could not understand such a remarkable change and improvement. On Monday morning they insisted on the X ray and promised that if they found everything normal, they would be satisfied to allow me to go. The X ray showed a normal condition, and to everybody's astonishment there were no marks or bruises on the body.

A few years before I took up the study of Christian Science a severe accident had left me with a weak heart and stomach. I would suddenly awaken at night with a feeling of not being able to breathe and would have to fight for breath. After telephoning to the practitioner I would gradually become normal. One night I awoke with one of these attacks and I suddenly realized that it was fear which was causing this distress. I declared the truth, trying to know that "perfect love casteth out fear." In the Bible we read, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee." I worked to know that fear is powerless, and fell asleep while working. This was a number of years ago and the healing has been permanent. Since that time I have realized that most of our distresses are the result of fear.
