When Christian Science was brought to my attention,...
When Christian Science was brought to my attention, nearly fifteen years ago, it found me, like Job, longing to know where I might find God. I had come to the place in my experience where I knew that no one but God could help me, for I had lost home, money, and the position I had held for many years, and was gradually losing my friends. Through the advice of a friend I turned to Christian Science for help, and from that moment I knew I had started on the right road. In seeking aid from a practitioner, I did not ask for help for physical conditions, but within two weeks I was healed of eczema, for which I had been under the constant care of skin specialists for over five years. I have had many other physical healings. A condition for which I had had five major surgical operations has been healed through Christian Science treatment. A broken bone, caused by falling while I was riding horseback, was healed in ten days through absent treatment; a tendency to have tonsillitis each spring has been overcome, and other physical difficulties have been quickly and permanently proved unreal, because, as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 474 of Science and Health, "The unreal vanishes, while all that is real is eternal."
While I am deeply grateful for the physical healings, the joy and peace which I now have through putting into practice my understanding of Christian Science cannot be told in words. I had been unable to accept the teachings of the church of which I was a member, especially those teachings regarding God, so I had not been a church attendant for many years. But I had always longed to have a right understanding of the Bible and to know more about God. I had questioned and pondered deeply the teachings of that church which said God was more merciful than an earthly father, yet that He had made His child capable of sinning and then had punished him for so doing. My cup seemed full and running over when I first glimpsed the truth about God as both Father and Mother, infinite Love; and if Christian Science had never done more for me than teach me, who had never known the love of a human mother, that I had an infinitely loving Mother, because I had God, I should feel it was the most wonderful gift I had ever received.
My thought is lifted each day in gratitude to God for revealing the truth to our beloved Leader, and to her for the clear and simple way in which she has given it to us. I am deeply grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for the privilege of class instruction, and for the unselfish, loving help of practitioners.
