Over twenty-five years ago I suffered from varicose veins

Over twenty-five years ago I suffered from varicose veins. One leg was strapped from the ankle to the hip with adhesive plaster, and I had to keep the foot off the floor. Every time I took a step the pain was intense. The attending doctor, who was a prominent surgeon, said that there was no help or cure for varicose veins without an operation, which might prove to be dangerous. I felt that I was of no help to myself or to anyone else, because of my physical condition. Our two older children were babies at that time, consequently I was needed, and did not feel that I could be away from them for ten days in the hospital.

My husband was in a distant city at this time and a friend was staying with me; and when I was up at night with the babies I would see a light under the door of her room. When I spoke of this she said that she was reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and was so interested in Christian Science that she wanted to read all of the time. The day following the doctor's decision that I must have an operation, I asked my friend if Christian Science could help me. She asured me that it could, and through a mutual friend I was directed to a Christian Science practitioner the next morning.

Previously I had talked about and made fun of anyone believing anything that a woman had to say about religion. I could not understand my friends who were Christian Scientists. On my way to the practitioner's office I was so afraid that someone would see me going there that I suffered severely, and I was frightened when I went into her office. She was very sweet and kind, and when I left her office I was healed. Never since have I suffered from varicose veins.
