The Test

How much are you willing to pay, dear heart,
When you name the name of God?
With uplifted head and a steady tread,
Can you pass beneath His rod?

How much can you suffer of smelting fire?
He will use but purest gold!
Can you set aside human will and pride,
To be cast within His mold?

Perhaps you must leave what you hold most dear,
In submission at His feet;
Can you vanquish terror and doubt—and stand
Till you've made the test complete?

For such are the things you may have to pay,
If you name the name of God.
Tis a path made bright with a Christly light;
Tis the path our Saviour trod!
