"Cities of refuge"

(Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatoriums)

Kedesh in Galilee! How sweet the name
To him who fled along those bygone ways
Before the avenger's hand, nor stayed his pace,
Nor slacked his breathless speed until he came
And thundered at the gate and told his cause.
For here was refuge: hitherward might flee
For safety he that sinned unwittingly;
Thus was it written in the ancient laws.

So we, who also flee earth's ways pursued
By ruthless fears until Love brings release
From every foe that torments or enthralls,
Lift up our ransomed hearts in gratitude
To her whose life made possible the peace,
The sanctuary of these sheltering walls.
