"Choose you"

Choose you this day whom ye will serve." Thus did the faithful Joshua admonish "all the tribes of Israel" after reviewing for them the great goodness which God had bestowed upon them, the guidance, protection, and deliverance that had been theirs from the day their father Abraham had forsaken the gods of his fathers to serve the one God. Following this loving, but imperative command, he added decisively, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

How many Christian Scientists have at some time during their experience stood at just such a crossroad as did the children of Israel feeling tempted, perhaps, to turn back! Then they have remembered the providence, the protection, the healings, and the manifold blessings that had been vouchsafed them since turning to serve the one God of truth and love, divine Principle, which Christian Science had revealed to them. Assuredly many there are today who could testify with humblest gratitude that the particular healing or deliverance which seemed delayed was fully realized or at least begun the moment they arrived at the definite decision to rely radically on Christian Science instead of turning back to the gods of matter—some remedy, means, or method other than Spirit.

A mother who had studied Christian Science but a short time was awakened in the night to find her infant son struggling with a distressing condition which she greatly feared. In her terror she reached for a material remedy which had alleviated this trouble in times past, only to find that she could not use it. She could not be faithless to the gleam of understanding which had been kindled in her heart by the Christ, Truth. As she turned with grateful acknowledgment to her newly found trust in God, infinite, ever-present divine Love, the child ceased his struggles and was soon peacefully asleep. The disorder was gone, never to return. This was the beginning of many years of radical and successful reliance on the Great Physician in every need.
