My attendance at a Christian Science lecture, contrary...
My attendance at a Christian Science lecture, contrary to my desires but to humor a friend, was the means of proving to me that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." The invitation to attend previous lectures had been refused, but I finally agreed, with the thought that I would then be able to express definite lack of interest and be free from such bother in the future. The lecture itself meant little to me. I left the church unimpressed and unchanged so far as I could then discern. The great change accomplished by mere exposure to the healing truth was yet to be revealed to me.
The following morning on rising, I lighted a cigarette as usual, but it went out unconsumed, and the tobacco habit of thirty years was instantly healed. Later in the day, on being offered a drink of whisky, I refused, and soon realized that the liquor habit of twenty years' standing had been completely eradicated. Two weeks later I broke my glasses into small pieces and threw them away, and the twenty-two-year-old belief of weak eyes was on the way to oblivion. Other physical healings have followed, of water on the knee overnight, colds, and fatigue, which had seemed to occur so often as to interfere with my normal work.
This lecture was attended over three years ago, and it is now possible to state with the certainty of experience that the healings mentioned are permanent. I have not engaged a physician in that period and can think of no conditions under which I should be tempted to do so; the healing efficacy of Christian Science has been proved so completely as to preclude such a possibility.
