Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Province of Alberta, Canada.

Among the numerous references to Christian Science in the press of this province nine called for letters of correction and information to the newspapers; and all but one were promptly published. One corrected identical medical items in the daily press of two cities. Of the others one showed how correlative passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy coincide with Scriptural texts. Another made clear that Christian Scientists find the example of Christ Jesus practicable in individual experiences and follow it.

In another the erroneous statement that the public demand for books on Christian Science had shifted was corrected with evidence to the contrary from records of the Christian Science Reading Room. The Committee on Publication also wrote privately to the author of a not wholly adverse reference, with a view to making a friendly contact and endeavoring to improve the view expressed.

After publishing two of this Committee's replies an editor's attitude became very favorable to our work. Whereas he had refused to give us space for advance notices of our Lesson-Sermons he now publishes them, when requested. Another editor sent to this office the letter of a subscriber, for direct reply, thus avoiding public controversy.

Experiences with editors in securing extension of this "good news" furnish evidences of healing. One wrote: "We certainly appreciate the kind contacts you made with us in your letter. Requests for publicity, expressed as you express them, make one feel it a privilege to be in a position to serve." Then followed a request for Christian Science literature.

Another editor wrote that he was making a sincere study of Christian Science and desired explanation of a Bible passage which appears contradictory. The opportunity to reply encouragingly and refer this inquirer to Mrs. Eddy's own explanation of it in Science and Health was very welcome. More recently this editor spoke editorially of the high standard of Christian Science church membership evidenced in our rejection of liquor and tobacco.

A Bible text for each day, usually selected by ministers over a wide area, is published at the top of its editorial page by a city newspaper. Six of these were supplied by this office and were credited to the Christian Science Committee on Publication. Another city newspaper published each day on its editorial page Scriptural texts from our Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons.

Our files hold many spontaneous expressions of editorial appreciation of the Monitor. Three of these follow: "We are pleased to receive this publication, as it is very valuable and informative on mattes which are seldom recorded in the usual run of daily newspapers. We wish The Christian Science Monitor every success and trust its influence will continue to spread." A lady editor wrote: "I should not like to be without it." Another columnist wrote: "Everybody should take the paper above mentioned. Its cost is merely nominal and it is one of the best educative papers extant. It has on its staff some of the finest leader writers in the world."

The number of reprints from our periodicals reported to this office increases. Mainly they are the spontaneous selection of the newspapers' staffs—reprinting with due credit notable good news items, poems, etc. About two hundred and sixty were reported to this office.
