I am grateful that the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, saw the wisdom of establishing The Christian Science Board of Lectureship as a channel through which this truth may go out into the world, to heal the suffering and reclaim the sinner.
I was confined in a hospital for five weeks with a condition diagnosed as double pneumonia and tuberculosis in its last stages with gangrene in both lungs. I was pronounced by physicians incurable, and was given up to die. At this point my employer asked me to try Christian Science, saying that it had healed his wife some years before. I was convinced that the doctors could do nothing more for me. The specialist had turned from my bed with tears in his eyes, saying that all had been done that could be done. Then only did I consent to an interview about Christian Science. The Scientist's first words were, "What and who is God?" She left with me a reprint of a Christian Science lecture, and from this I tried to find out more about God. My reward came in a quotation from the fifty-first Psalm: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. ... Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation."
The next morning I walked around my cot. The nurses thought I was hysterical. I asked the doctor to stop all medicine, as it made me sick; and to humor me he consented. A copy of Science and Health had been borrowed for me at a Christian Science Reading Room. I read, studied, and pondered its truths. On page 558 of this book its author, Mrs. Eddy, states: "When understood, it [Science] is Truth's prism and praise. When you look it fairly in the face, you can heal by its means, and it has for you a light above the sun, for God 'is the light thereof.'"
