As a boy and young man I did not care for religion, but lived for my pleasures and always tried to attend to my own interests. However, I contracted a sickness that, according to the opinion of medical science, was incurable under certain circumstances. As there seemed to be very little chance for recovery, I tried other systems, such as water cure, diet, and so on. At the same time I also began to read the Bible, but apparently without profit, even though my thoughts began to circle about a very dim concept of God.

One day I heard about Christian Science and that through this Science all manner of diseases could be healed. As I was worse than ever, I determined at once to ask a practitioner for help. After a few visits to the practitioner I felt occasional relief. I began to study the Bible and Science and Health, and I soon found that I understood the former in quite a new way. When reading the fourteenth chapter of John I felt a confidence quite new to me, and began to understand that the promises in the Bible are true and valid even in our day.

Some time after my first visit to the practitioner, the thought came suddenly to me as distinctly as if it had been audibly spoken, There is no evil. I saw at once that this was the simple truth, and I experienced a sense of happiness and freedom that no word can express. The pain did not disappear at once, but now I knew that it was nothing real. My fear was gone, and I could faithfully obey Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 391): "Mentally contradict every complaint from the body, and rise to the true consciousness of Life as Love,—as all that is pure, and bearing the fruits of Spirit." After a very short time all the pain left.
