In 1913, when I was about to undergo an operation, I was assured by a friend that I could be healed through Christian Science. But as I was the wife of a physician, and my sister also was a doctor, it seemed difficult to attempt, for I knew that they would oppose it. In Isaiah we read, "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength." Realizing this, I went to a Christian Science practitioner, and in the first interview I saw that this procedure was right, even though I was not sure I would receive my healing.
After I had had about three treatments, my family learned that I was trying Christian Science. They then endeavored to have me set a day for the operation, as I had postponed it to try this Science. I answered, "I have been helped, and I know that I can be healed if allowed to continue." My sister asked me if I would go to the specialist, tell him that I had been trying Christian Science, and ask him for another examination; and if he found the condition malignant and thought it dangerous to delay the operation, would I abide by his decision? After a moment I agreed. I saw the specialist the next morning, and after a very thorough examination he said that the growth had so changed that he would not operate. My joy was unbounded! My healing was complete. Soon after my first healing I was healed of tonsillitis by reading our textbook. I had been subject to this trouble several times during the winter, and now, even if that had been my only healing, it would be sufficient to call forth very much gratitude.
I am grateful for having had the desire to study faithfully from the beginning and to apply what little knowledge I had. The occasion for a test came when, having been thrown down in the surf several times and rescued, I found one arm incapacitated. Later I learned that a blood vessel had broken. My desire to be alone with my books to work as taught in Christian Science was fulfilled. At that time the suggestion to use material means came to me several times before I recognized it as error, but when I did so I denied its power and dismissed it quickly, declaring that Christian Science had healed. Almost immediately, acute indigestion attacked me and the pain was so severe that it was difficult to think or work for myself. My husband had just returned home and saw my condition. I felt that I could not call a practitioner then, and was again tempted to use a material remedy. Recognizing this as temptation, as was also the thought that I could not call a practitioner or work for myself in such intense pain, I declared to myself, If I cannot work and have to pass on, I shall do so knowing that Christian Science heals and that God is All-in-all. Again I was instantaneously healed! The healing of a broken ankle took place quickly and completely when I decided to depend upon Christian Science wholly.
