About twenty years ago I was suddenly taken ill with convulsions. This attack lasted so long that the doctor who was called in, after consulting a second doctor, decided to operate. After the operation my family was told that there was practically no hope for my recovery. All that human kindness and skill could do was done by them. A friend who was staying in the house at the time knew of my interest in Christian Science and procured the help of a practitioner. For five days and nights I was unconscious, and when I did regain consciousness I had lost my memory. The doctors despaired of my life, but thanks to the loving help of the practitioner, who "beheld in Science the perfect man" (Science and Health, p. 476), in spite of all material evidence, I was healed in three weeks. After a few months my memory was completely restored.
Strange as it may seem, this healing did not induce me to take up the study of Christian Science. The pleasures as well as the cares and disappointments of this life seemed to absorb my whole interest. It was the illness of my child which made me turn to God. I knew God could be "a very present help in trouble" if only He were understood. The complaint was pneumonia, and I always feel thankful to the doctor for his kindness and courtesy at the time. He called daily, knowing that we were depending entirely on Christian Science, and when the child was healed he remarked, "I wish there were more Christian Scientists." The remembrance of my husband's attitude at that time also fills me with gratitude, as he agreed to dispense with materia medica, although he did not share my views.
My sincere gratitude goes out to the practitioner, who with love and patience worked untiringly day and night until the freedom of that little child was realized and manifested. This proof of God's love compelled me to take up the study of Christian Science, which, before this, had been only an interesting topic to read and talk about.
