When Christian Science was first brought to my attention...
When Christian Science was first brought to my attention I was in the depths of despair, not knowing which way to turn for help. I had been in bed for six months and thought I should never be able to leave it again. Occasionally I would get up for a little while, but I was ill and depressed.
Some friends, who were desirous that I should gain my health, and who were interested in Christian Science, asked me to attend a Christian Science lecture which was to be given one Sunday afternoon. I accepted the invitation and went with them. Because of my weakened condition I had to be assisted up the stairs into the lecture room. It was very trying for me, in my state of thought, to sit through the lecture, as I was very uncomfortable and full of self-pity. I listened to the lecture, but not knowing anything about Christian Science, it did not seem to mean much to me. Nevertheless, it meant my salvation, for at the close of the lecture the speaker spoke of his own healing, which impressed me very much.
At the time, because of varicose ulcers, my right leg was strapped from the knee down to the ankle. I had suffered for eighteen years with this disease, often having to get around with one leg on a chair. After attending the lecture, I suffered much more pain than ever before. Once more I called in my physician, who again told me the condition was incurable and that there was nothing he could do for me. He advised me to rest and cautioned me to keep my foot off the ground. The leg was gradually becoming shorter. After much thinking I decided to ask my friends if they would put me in touch with a practitioner, which they very lovingly did. I felt depressed and hopeless, and was ready to receive what Christian Science might have for me in the way of healing. I am grateful to say that I was healed, and like those who turned to Jesus for healing, I went on my way glorifying God.
